It’s just 5 days to go until the Melbourne Cup at the Flemington Race Course in Australia and already Melbourne Cup tips are flying around on who to bet on and who might edge the 3,200m turf race this year. Started in 1861, it is the richest 2-mile handicap in the world and has been run on the first Tuesday in November since its inception. While the final field won’t be revealed until this Saturday, let’s take a look at who are the early predicted favourites and who might scoop the lion’s share of an total $8million prize pot.
Last year saw Gold Trip, a UK horse ridden by jockey Mark Zahra take the title. The trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace were lauded by many and, this year, they have 3 different horses in contention including Gold Trip, who will look to do the double. In a rather strange twist of fate, however, Mark Zahra will also be competing again, but has opted against riding Gold Trip in favour of ‘Without a Fright’, who won the Caulfield Cup recently on the 21st October. Whether this will create an air of tension or affect his chances, remains to be seen, however the Melbourne Cup betting odds have him further afield in the odds.
At the time of writing, according to the BetVictor horse racing odds, the top 4 predicted winners are as follows:
- In 4th place at 8/1*, meaning a £10 bet would return £90, is Soulcombe. With 5 wins from 13 flat turf races, the 4yr old bay gelding from GB could be a good choice.
- In 3rd place at 6/1*, with a £10 bet returning £70, is Without a Fight. With 10 wins from 22 flat turf races, ridden by last years winner Mark Zahra and owned by billionaire, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, the 5yr old bay mare from Ireland is an elite option and a great bet.
- In 2nd place at 4/1*, with a £10 wager paying out £50, is last years winner Gold Trip. With just 3 wins from 24 flat turf races, but the defending champion at the Melbourne Cup, his owners Australian Bloodstock have chosen champion jockey James McDonald to ride the 6yr old bay stallion from France. Having won last years Cup, he’s a pretty solid bet as far as Melbourne Cup Tips go.
- In 1st place at 5/2*, meaning a £10 bet would payout £35, is Vauban. With 4 wins from 6 flat turf races, Ryan Moore will jockey the front-runner who is trained by Willie Mullins, as he attempts to land the coveted Melbourne Cup Trophy. The 5yr old Chestnut gelding from France, owned by Mrs S Ricci, has won the Ballyroan Stakes in August at Naas and the Ascot Copper Horse Handicap in June, but can the male gelding meet the great odds he’s been given in the Melbourne Cup … only time can tell.
For now, stay tuned to our latest Melbourne Cup odds as new updates unfold, owners are asked whether they wish to pay the final $45,375 entry fee and jockeys are confirmed fit to ride.
